The experience of working at Graef, Anhalt, Schloemer & Associates only lasted about 2 years and was very stressful. I was asked to sell GIS services yet they never purchased Esri software for me to create projects. I had to download demo software and illustrations to create materials to show potential clients GIS processes. Well it was a disaster and I knew I had to move on. The person responsible for my job, Mike Lefebvre tried to keep me from leaving by saying it didn't matter that I wasn't making any sales, but I knew I couldn't keep going and not be noticed. I think they just wanted to be able to say they had GIS skills within the company.
An Inspector
When the company got a contract to work on the Highway 41 frontage road construction, it took a lot of resources and many times they needed extra bodies. Inspector was a job that they were always without someone to fill that job. A couple of times I was asked to fill this position and it was very stressful. I would have to look like I knew what I was doing by carrying a clipboard and taking notes of what I was seeing. However, if anyone looked like they were coming towards me, I was to get in my vehicle and move to another location. I don't believe I was ever cornered and had to fake knowing something. I'm sure if I had been caught, the company couold have been fined for not having a qualified inspector at these locations.Highway 45
Another project involved Highway 45 from Highway 29 to Tigerton. I'm not sure if I provided any GIS expertise, but I did provide measurement services. They gave me a measurement wheel and I would walk the centerline measuring lengths of the highway. The one issue I had, they never provided road worker signs to warn motorists using the highway. So there was this idiot walking down the middle of the road and many times the cars would come very close to me. I started to feel like the cars were playing "See how close we can get to the idiot walking in the road".From the gallery
